This week’s sermon is based on the premise that UUs are likely to engage in utilitarian decision making. It appears that the focus on the likely consequences of our decisions associated with utilitarianism fits nicely with the tendency of UUs to be knowledgeable, reasonable, and objective when making decisions. The reliance on utilitarian decision making by UUs probably also represents a rejection of decision making based on absolute rules such as it is wrong to tell a lie. UUs are likely to realize that while such rules should usually be followed, they also recognize that depending on the consequences, lying under some circumstances can be ethically justified. While utilitarian decision making is usually an effective approach, it does have a dark side that also needs to be considered and addressed. Today’s sermon will look at utilitarian decision making and the need to address the unintended consequences that can arise because of its use. By dealing with these unintended consequences, the accuracy of one’s moral compass can be enhanced.
