Spilling the T: A Trans Perspective on Unitarian Universalists and Inclusivity of the Trans Community

In the past year, there have been 47 pieces of anti-trans legislation introduced across the nation. Most recently, here in Texas, the state legislature has banned trans youth under age 18 from accessing gender-affirming care, including puberty blockers, which many rely on to pause the development of dysphoria-inducing secondary sex characteristics. Much of this hatred is inspired by “bad theology” that has been used to support the gender binary, which is actually a relatively novel concept. In this sermon, we’ll explore the history and role of trans people in other cultures and traditions throughout history, examine the ways that gender nonconformity shows up in the natural world, as well as explore the ways that our congregations can become more inclusive of our trans members and friends, leaning into our principle which calls on us to support the worth and dignity of all people.
