Labor Day

For many of us, Labor Day represents nothing more than the last three-day weekend of the summer. While it is nice to have a three-day weekend, it is easy to overlooks the true meaning of the holiday. Labor Day is intended to celebrate the contributions made by workers and their unions. Life as we know it would be different if unions had not been effective in the past. Today’s talk will look at the current status of unions in the United States. While unionizing efforts at Amazon and Starbucks have received much media attention, workers in neither company have secured collective bargaining agreements. Reasons for this lack of success will be examined. However, not all news concerned with unions has been negative in recent years. Several factors indicative of a resurgence in the union movement will be reviewed with special attention given to the current position of the UU Association with respect to labor unions.
