Worship Services
Some folks wonder what a Unitarian-Universalist worship service is like, given that our congregation has diverse beliefs, some of which seen unconventional in the traditional Protestant context.
Here’s how our pastor describes worship at U2C3:
Worship is really the center of what we do here at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Corpus Christi, so we put a lot into it. This church is full of talented musicians, and our worship is a collaboration of ideas and a mix of talents. Here is something I said about worship from a recent sermon:
The web definition of liturgy says that it comes from a combination of two Greek words, laos (people) and ergon (work). The literal translation is “the work of the people”. I don’t know if you have ever noticed this, but almost every Sunday, I have two readings. One is kind of familiar; the other is kind of strange. It’s a yin and yang kind of thing. And we often present two kinds of music here–churchy hymnal choral kinds of music, and secular, popular band music. And the worship service is divided up into times we talk about very serious things and very silly things, very mundane practical announcement things and very inward spiritual emotional things. There are times when we stand up and sing and when we sit down and be quiet, times when we talk a lot and when we don’t talk at all. All in all, it sounds like a lot of work.
We design worship at this church to remind all of us that we are alive, from the inside. We want our common worship to make you think, make you laugh, give you comfort and strength and courage, and allow you the time and space to celebrate, lament, reflect, and make meaning from all the diverse pieces of your life.
Come! Let us worship together!
