Ishka Monument with Daniel Bear Heart Lara

In 1998, during the expansion of Ennis Joslin Road, excavation teams discovered what would subsequently be recognized as a portion of the second-most extensive documented Native American burial site. The location, extending along Oso Bay between Ocean Drive and South Padre Island Drive, had been recognized within the community for generations due to cultural artifacts and skeletal remains that were discovered by children exploring the shoreline during the 1950s and 1960s. Dr. Fred McGee from the University of Texas established that the remains dated back approximately 700 years and were associated with the Lipan Apache, Comanche, and Karankawa peoples, proving the historic significance of the area.

Daniel Bear Heart Lara is a tribal leader of the Lipan Apache Tribe in Corpus Christi. He is married to Cindy Little Feather Lara through a sacred ceremony. They have 3 daughters and have ceremonially adopted other family members. Daniel Bear Heart is an authorized officiant of all 7 sacred ceremonies.
