Modern Mental Health Impacts of Artificial Intelligence to Consider with Kelli Thompson & April Huxell

Recent research on the cognitive and socio-emotional impacts of AI will be discussed, with special attention given to the disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations and broad ethical considerations.

Dr. Thompson will present some recent research on the cognitive impacts of generative AI (artificial intelligence), including negative impacts to critical thinking and increased cognitive offloading in individuals with heavy AI-usage. April Huxley will bring her expertise as a mental health professional to present the social-emotional impacts, including ethical considerations to consider when chatbots cause human harm. We will be asked to consider balancing the ongoing risks and benefits of this new technology as we adapt to how it will shape our collective futures.

We would like the congregation to honestly grapple with the mental health risks and benefits in order to help us all make informed decisions about how and to what extent we integrate generative AI into our daily lives.

April Huxell is a Licensed Professional Counselor and has worked in the field of Mental Health for over a decade. April is an avid lover of science, history, anthropology, music and art. April has considered herself a Unitarian Universalist since 2014, but She and her 10 year old son Tristan became official members of UU Corpus Christi in April of this year.

Kelli R. Thompson, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Texas A&M Kingsville and has worked many years in juvenile delinquency rehabilitation. She jokingly refers to herself as a “recovering Baptist” and found a love for Unitarian Universalism while studying at Fuller Theological Seminary.
