Love is the Doctrine of this Church
These words are credited to L. Griswold Williams, a Universalist minister who served churches in Pennsylvania, Vermont, and New York during the first part of this century. We credit these words to him because they were published for the first time in his 1933 collection of readings for use in worship. Versions of these words, though, had already been in use for decades by a number of different Unitarian and Universalist congregations. Indeed, today, a large number of Unitarian Universalist congregations still use variations of this reading as their congregation’s covenant.
